Thanks Marc!

Well in two days my brother successfully completed the new porch! He works quickly when he gets going.

The floor joist of the porch is all new, as are all the boards. We decided to keep the same railing to cut down on costs and it is still in great shape. Just needs a good coat of paint. He also made a new post at the top of the stairs. The old one was in bad shape and super ugly.

He had some steps that were left over from a deck project that he recently completed. They were only a couple of years old and were in near perfect condition. We decided to use those and I gave them a couple of coats of grey paint. They look brand new!

I painted the pillars above the brick (ugly brick I might add... any suggestions on what to do with that?). It is only one coat but I think I like the effect.

Next decision is what to do with the railing, post and trellis. I'm thinking of going all grey but I'm not entirely sure. I would love your feedback!

The floor board will have to wait till next summer. Apparently you can't paint pressure treated lumber for a year. Oh well.. one less thing to tackle for now!

  2. Looks lovely! I'd paint the post and the top rail grey and leave the spindles white.

  4. It looks so great! Painting the brick white would probably be a great option and would tie the brick in with the rest of the house... then you can paint the post and railing a colour the will complement the grey? Maybe even just a different shade?

  5. I'm liking the grey. You could paint everything grey and I would paint your chairs green to match your door. Or just paint the posts grey and leave everything else white. Painting the brick white is also a good option as it doesn't look like you have any other brick showing on your house. Really you can't go wrong. If you don't like it just paint it again next year.

Your brother did a really nice job in only 2 days. Impressive!

  9. It looks awesome! I love that grey that you used on the stairs. And I actually like the brick, but I also think painting it would probably bring a wow factor too.

  13. He did a great job! I agree with the above posts - love the brick! once you paint it it's a lot of maintenance to keep it looking good and you can't go back...I just painted my porch a similar gray (and kept brick columns) check my post out if you want a preview of your finished product :)

  14. Looks fantastic! Regarding the brick - I always think that painted brick looks really nice, but my husband is 100% against it as he says it's really hard to reverse and takes away from the original integrity of the design... I still say paint it - how hard can it be to remove down the road? And, I saw your post to my blog re: the color of your door. I adore it and hope you keep it - but I might also steal the look which would mean I could see it all the time myself! :)

  19. I think you should keep more than half of it a bright white, and maybe add in a splash of yellow somewhere? It looks great though!

  20. You're so lucky to have a brother who will do all that work for you:) When I work on interiors I always do vertical one colour and horizontal another. This keeps things nice and calm. Maybe white all around on the vertical including the part above the brick and gray for the stair and hand rail.
