Unsure.

I got to work and painted my new thrifted coffee table for the living room. I contemplated going yellow, blue or even green but of course I ended up with my trusty white! But now I'm unsure. I thought white was always right?
I was really happy with how it turned out until I put it back in the room. When placed against the cream rug, it just doesn't feel right. Maybe I just need to live with it a bit and I'll see.

After:

It is still a bit tacky, so I'll wait a couple of days before I put anything on it, just to be safe.
So looking forward to the long weekend! How about you?

  1. I like it white, but what about your blue!

I love the way you use color!

  2. I could see it in a deeper shade of that cushion that is on your sofa. I like the white, but I think it blends in too much with your rug.

  3. I think it looks fine against the rug, you can brighten it up by adding yellows and blue accent pieces!

  4. Your look is not white on white--or white on cream. Definitely you need to either change the rug or repaint the table. It has such gorgeous lines, it's a pity they fade into the rug.

  5. I think it may work with some bright colors and textures on top. Maybe some kind of mirrored tray with flowers or colored glass. The lines look great though and I definitely think you can make it work.

  6. I agree.. the white is not really working this time.. perhaps a navy blue?

  7. Wow! It's so much prettier in white than wood! I'd wait to see how it looks with accessories, but I think it could be fabulous painted a color too.

  8. I'll be interested to see how it looks once you are able to place bright accent pieces on it.

My current thought is that it blends in with the rug a little too much -- you need a pop of color. The gorgeous lines of that table just fade away, BUT like I said, I think some fun accent pieces would help.

  9. I like it in white. I definitely think that a big change sometimes needs some getting used to. I painted a nearly identical table pale yellow years ago, with disastrous results. But white is always a good bet.

  10. You know, I"m not normally a white person but I think with some great accessories it could work. If it doesn't thrill you, change it to the same blue you did that cute end table.

  11. I know I'm in the minority here, but I would wait to see how it looks once you style the top. I think the white shows the gorgeous lines and wouldn't give up on it yet. Plus, your fireplace and trim are white! I'd love to see a picture of the whole room with the table once it's done. So pretty! :-)

  12. I, too, think it would look pretty in your pale blue.

  13. i think the white is fine, but i can definitely see it in a darker shade of the blue in the room. BUT you might be able to add some punch just by adding accessories. try adding some colorful candlesticks or something before repainting the whole thing.

  14. Your paint job came out really nice! I agree with those that said to see how you like it once you add some accessories. Let us know!

  15. I see what you mean here - if your rug was a different color, the table would "pop". See how you like it over the next few days and if you're still not happy, paint again! I think it would be really cool in a deeper hue of one of the blues you have in the room already. It's a great table though!

  16. keep the white girl! once you accessorize, you'll love it!

  17. the paint job looks great and really updated the table. i would wait and see how it looks with some items on top. is changing out the rug an option?

  18. I think I agree I love it in white, is a rug change an option at all?

  19. I think it looks great and once you but some accessories on it, it will be even better. What an awesome find!

  20. I love the white! It looks beautiful. What do use to paint? A sprayer?

  21. I'm partial to white and think it will look food with some fun, graphic accessories!

  22. So what did you decide? I vote white or off white.

  23. I like it in white - I would sit on it for a bit and decide later.

  24. I like the fresh white, plus with accessories and stuff it might look even better than it does. I actually like a mix of White and Cream ;) I looks so different painted...love it!

  25. Ohhh that is cute but I think blue would add that somethin' extra!

  26. I think it looks great white. Once you accessorize it, I bet it won't look so stark (and white) against the rug.

  27. I really like it! Think it turned out great! What was the process like?

  28. White looks good- I would also think a grey shade? simmilar to the background of the bird picture behind? XX Samantha

  29. If you decide to change it and don't go the blue route, what about a soft grey? That would be a nice contrast and would go well with your furniture/accessories in the photo. Keep us posted!

  30. I love the white. What about getting a mirror cut for the same size as the rectangle detail (check a glass cutter - they are not very expensive). This would define those sexy curves that the coffee table has and reflect the colors of the accessories you place on top.

  31. I was thinging a gray/blue, however if yo put up a work or art or mirror on that wall it could pull it all together!

  32. Your house is like a dollhouse I love it!

  33. I liked the ottoman better. The ottoman worked for several reasons: the color matched and repeated the pillow color; the dark legs repeated the color of the picture frames and the shape worked well. It was a classic, modern look and looked great with your chair.

For me, the coffee table is a bit of a miss. It throws off the room a bit-kind of had a modern vibe with the ottoman. I think what I don't like is the scalloped wood curves on it and the color. While you could do a soft turquoise, color matched to the sofa, I still wouldn't be fond of the curved detail. I do think yellow might work as well, since you have it in the chair, but overall, I prefer the ottoman. I also think it gives a more "vintage" touch and I think the classic, modern look works a bit better in the living room.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  34. It looks awesome! It's amazing what white can do for furniture! something that I normally wouldn't like is transformed into something a little more baroque-looking!!

  35. I like the white, but I think a soft gray would punch it up a notch. It would still show off the nice lines of the table and be a neutral backdrop for what you display on top.

  36. Great table! What if you played up the scrolled edge border by taping off the inner rectangle on the top of the table and paint its border a color (maybe a nice green to match the print in your gorgeous chair)? Or what about a huge stencil on the table (which would only work if you keep the table cleared off)? I think there is great potential to take it from "Oh a white coffee table" to "Look at that cute coffee table!"

  37. What about the shade of blue like the pillow on your couch? Gold paint on the detailing?? That may be pretty scrumptious...

  38. Looks great- great job! I bet once you add some darker accessories, it will tie in nicely with the space. :) Great job on the refinishing. :)

  39. I like the white. Can't wait to see how you accessorize the top!

  40. Well done my dear, I like it! Sure when you have your coffeetablebooks on top of them, candles and some flowers it will look chic!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I LIke it. I think that once you get stuff on it you will like it too (like your tray)...I have almost the EXACT same table that we used for a bench in our bedroom!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with other posts I think the white might "float" a bit because of white rug. I would wait until the coffee table is completely dry and then put some accessories on top of the table. Those cute coaster that you put coloured paper behind. If all else fails I would go with a shade of blue to complement your couch pillows. Do i see an Easter weekend project in your future? Or you could wait it out. May grow on you.

  43. Is it just me, or does anyone else start to get nervous when they see an anonymous comment??? I'm just waiting for the day when it's a scathing remark from some unhappy person...scary. (c:

But the table on the other hand turned out *fabulous*! And I think the white is awesome because you are going to put stuff on it anyway that will brighten it up and play off the blank canvas...fantastic find!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well the white is definitely an improvement (obviously)! That's probably what I would have done too... I tend to make "safe" choices. Once it dries, you'll be able to jazz it up with some colorful accents and maybe you'll like it better then!

  45. I love white. I really do. But have you thought of stripping the top and staining it with a dark walnut stain?

Love hearing from you! Thanks so much :)
