As promised, here is a little snapshot of my new two tone kitchen cabinets. I took the plunge after going back and forth for a while about whether I wanted to keep it all white or paint the base cabinets a darker shade. Once we painted the walls (Benjamin Moore Intense White), I felt as though the room felt "too white". Odd, since I am obsessed with white interiors. Somehow it just didn't feel cozy and I knew the room need some color to ground the space.
I tried dozens of color chips. First thinking a light grey, then deciding on dark. But what color? Blue grey, green gray, charcoal gray? I ended up deciding on Benjamin Moore Whale Gray. I'm happy with the choice. It's definitely charcoal gray but leans to the blue side a bit. Actually, it looks quite purple in the photos but it's not.. I swear :)
It was a bit scary when I first started painting and almost seemed garage floor-ish to me (which is the worst kind of gray in my opinion!). However, I trudged ahead and I must say, I really really like it. A lot. It makes it feel like furniture rather than kitchen cabinets, which is a look I love.
In case you missed it, and are curious to know what it looked like before (and pre reno!), you can read this post.

But this is awesome and is making me change my tune. It's like this room was beging for these colors. Have you done a post on painting your cabinets. It looks so professional of a finish.

I just found your blog, and I have to say that I LOVE your kitchen. The two tone cabinets are something I would LOVE to do! My kitchen is pretty small so I'm not sure I could pull it off. Did you paint your cabinets the old fashioned way or did you use a cabinet refinishing kit? Beautiful.

Oh Jane, you nailed it! Definitely gorgeous! I can see an antique brass pendant light in your future:) Love it all.
ReplyDeleteI think your kitchen looks wonderful! Love the rich combination of the Whale Gray with the countertops and flooring + the crisp white "upper deck". Have to read the other post to see the before. I'm struggling with the decision about painting a section of my base cabinets, and I also have a shaker profile and lots of drawers like you, so this post is so helpful. Love your comment that the paint transformed the feeling of the cabinets to furniture. Maybe its in the other post, but which of the Ben Moore paint products did you use for the cabinets? Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWow, the gray looks amazing! I love the look of the gray with the hardware and with the wood counter top and flooring. I like it so much, I think I'd love to see the upper cabinets in the gray. Beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteWow! Looks unbelievable! I think you made a great choice.
ReplyDeleteI love them! Your kitchen is beautiful :)

ReplyDeleteI am perusing kitchen inspiration and love the look you've got! I think I'm going gray on the lower cabinets and a lighter shade on the top ... but I'm not sure yet. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning!! I love the two tone. We are in the midst of a kitchen redo right now and were debating two tone cabinets. I think your inspiring pictures may just make this a choice for us. :)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love! I have ugly red oak cabinets and need to do something like this for sure!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I am doing a kitchen revamp soon and have been trying to decide between one colour or two on the cabinets... yours look fabulous! Can't wait to check out more of your blog (I'm a décor and design loving teacher from the opposite side of Canada - Vancouver Island!).
ReplyDeleteJane, your kitchen looks amazing! The two tone cabinets look SO GOOD, and I really like your color choice of Whale Gray. I'd love to feature this on my paint color blog. You wouldn't have to do a thing, just let me know if you're interested!

ReplyDeleteLove this! What was your source for the drawer pulls? They're lovely.
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with color. there is no disputing that. BUT as a certified kitchen designer, the first thing I saw was the poor placement of the range and the hood. You are unable to open your corner wall cabinet fully, since it will bang into the hood. You should have consulted a kitchen designer beforehand, because they would have solved your problems for you. You should have put a 90 degree corner wall cabinet, not a 45 degree. sorry but it just doesn't work for me, functionally.

ReplyDeleteI love your kitchen! The white and gray are perfect and the butcher block and wood floor keep it from feeling cold. I wanted to let you know that it's one of my most frequently repinned and liked pins.
So pretty! Can I ask what color paint you used on the upper cabinets? Was it the same as the wall color or a different white?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I have a question do you have any pictures of the countertop? I am doing a plaster chalk paint uppers and a gray lower and making a butcherblock countertop and love what looks like the red of yours. Thanks
