I Need Paint Help.

I painted the dresser and stayed true to my word.. it's not white! I rummaged around through the paint in my basement and found, among an embarrassing number of cans, a can of a beautiful grey paint. I figured, why not? Saved me from going out and buying some. Plus, it was a snow day so I was confined to the house!

The color is Jet Set by Debbie Travis but was mixed in Beauti-tone's Natura paint line. It went on nicely and I liked the color against the walls. It almost has a hint of purple to the grey. (Yes, I know there is a crack in one of the drawers. I like when things aren't perfect.. or maybe I'm just lazy? :)

Looks not bad, right? However, strangely enough, the paint doesn't seem to want to dry. It dawned on me where the paint came from. My good friend Emily bought it to paint a cabinet in her dining room. It turned out great but 2 years later, it's still tacky! We had the paint here so my dad tried it on a little table he was working on. Same problem!

Hmmm... anyone use this brand of paint before, or run into this problem? I wish I had remembered this before I started. I'm hoping that a coat of water based Varathane with seal the finish. Thoughts? I'd appreciate any suggestions!

On a brighter note. I have 8 pretty glass knobs to add a little sparkle to the piece! Once I get this sticky situation figured out, I'll be back with a proper before and after.

  1. I hate when that happens, I painted a nightstand with Martha Stewart paint recently and had to wait about 2 weeks until is didn't feel sticky anymore. I also had the problem with a paint from Lowes, this is why I only like to use Benjamin Moore. I can say that I tried coating over the sticky paint with a wipe on poly and it didn't work. I'd give it a week and see how it feels, if its still sticky you might want to repaint.

  2. i have had that happen with a certain paint- i read that you could use a water based polycrylic over it and it would harden. i did that and it worked just fine for me. you may want to try a drawer first though just to test it before you do the whole thing.

  3. I had this happen when using Olympic No VOC paint. We primed and painted two nightstands and two desks before realizing the problem. Now our desks are absolutely horrible! It is 6 months later and they are still tacky! I would use a poly on them but have concerns about chemicals with a small baby in the house. argh! Sorry no advice, just empathy.

  4. I've come across this before. Unfortunetly if brush on clear coat doesn't fix it then not a whole lot will..

  5. ooops. I forgot to mention specifically not to buy the spray just brush. Some paints when applied to some surfaces end up like this, usually because there is a lot of pigment in them. Like the emeralds green I did had a similar problem... dark or pigmented colors...

  6. How frustrating! Why don't you try bringing a space heater into the room and see if you can accelerate the drying process? Keep us posted please!

  7. yes, this is Natura from Home Hardware, right?

I was buying paint from Home Hardware and when I was selecting the Natura base for them to tint, the associate advised me that they've had problems with it not drying and that they were required to inform customers before buying that they were doing so at there own risk. I guess that they won't refund or exchange the paint if they've given you warning.
I thought it was odd- I presume they will be phasing it out or replacing it with another voc-free product. They didn't say anything about the depth of tint just that the Natura line was a problem.
    So disappointing!

  9. I don't know how the varathane will work, but I had this same problem when I painted the inside of some cupboards and a friend who builds houses told me to use regular furniture wax on it, which worked after only 1 coat.

  12. Maybe a finish on top like others have mentioned will help. But definitely try it on a drawer or small part first. It might be the paint or what you put it over. I had something happen like that with a stain I used.

Or if you wanted a different look you could hit it with a sander for a dind of distressed look. I did that to this dresser

Then you can seal it with poly.

It is a great color, let us know what happens!

  14. I have used the poly and that seems to work. I have a table that is still sticky and I never sealed it. Good luck! Love the color!

  15. The color is beautiful. I love when I already have the paint in the basement and don't need to leave the house.

I painted our coffee table recently and it's still tacky days later. I'll follow your lead on this one!
