Modern Meets Feminine - WhY not?

My friend Kendra recently bought an awesome condo at the WhY lofts in downtown Charlottetown. The building was once a YMCA club and many of the old architectural features still exist. The hallways are the existing mosaic tiled walls from the old pool, the staircases are reclaimed wood from the basketball court and bowling lanes. It all works in a modern interpretation of what it once was.

I stopped over, back in the spring, before her contractor had started any work. It was essentially a blank canvas for Kendra to make her own. She certainly knew what she wanted and I nodded in agreement with each sample that she pulled out. I left feeling jealous but insanely excited for her. What a fun project!

Needless to say, her choice of finishes turned out simply beautiful. The result is a perfect modern, white canvas with a few pops of color. You know how I love WHITE! The finishes are sleek and minimalist. She even had some simplistic, modern-lined furniture made and it turned out amazing. Everything feels warm and feminine next to its rich brown bamboo floors, huge shimmery, textured wall, and black ceiling.
She won't let me take full pictures just yet, as it will take some time before she accumulates artwork and accesssories that reflect her personal style. But here is a sneak peek!

A cute welcome to loft #12.

Custom glossy white cabinets with a PINK:) backsplash.

Industrial stairs with reclaimed wood treads.

Sharp black ceiling. Kendra wanted glossy black against the advice of her contractor,
but the result is stunning.

On a side note, Kendra needs advice on what to do here. She needs to cover the windows for privacy reasons but has no idea how to attach a curtain rod without damaging the beautiful wall covering.

Any suggestions?
More photos to come. Hopefully soon!:)

  1. This apartment is spectacular. I love her modern kitchen and the black ceiling. I don't have any idea how to hang a curtain in that spot without hurting the wall. I hope that she can come up with something.

  2. how high are the ceilings? any way they could be hung from there?

  3. Tension rods? Or as kelly said, hang them from the ceiling. She could also find some pretty stained glass panels and hang them in front of the windows. They would give her some privacy, but allow the light in.

  4. Just wanted to add that the black ceilings are really a great idea. Reminds me of what they do in clubs and such to give the appearance of height. Not sure about the pink in the kitchen, but that's just because I've never seen it used before. It could really make a great statement.

  6. Thank you so much for the very helpful and lovely comments!!

The ceilings are 20', so hanging them from there will be quite difficult :) I have searched for tension rods, but can NOT find ones long enough!! (the door is almost 7 feet across!!) I have also had comments about frosting the glass, and also roman blinds that are attached to the door. I am thinking that roman blinds may be best for the room??

  7. Try looking for a tension shower curtain rod. Most are 6 foot or longer

  9. I think the pink backsplash is super cool. But, I wonder if a glass tile would add a little texture or glitz to the kitchen... you could still do it in pink.

  10. How about using those (removable) 3M hooks? a row of them across the windows, with the drapery swagged tied to each. hooks at the bottom corners of the curtain would allow the curtains to be looped up to allow in light. then unhook the end to have the curtains cover the windows.

  11. most hardware stores sell privacy film... it gives the impression of frosted glass, but can be removed when you grow tired of the look. also, there are so many styles of privacy film... i put a really pretty frost film with a paisley print on my sliding glass door (ugh, hate those)

  12. You're place looks amazing! Love the black ceiling - it must really emphasize the height!
I'm wondering where you found the recliamed wood for the stairs? I'm looking to have a table made with reclaimed wood, and love the look of your stairs!
Best of luck with the rest of the renos!

  16. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective.

A lot of times it's very difficult to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and appearance. I must say you've done
a superb job with this. In addition, the blog loads very quick for me on Safari.
